Porridge for Bedtime

Nelle and I had brunch the other day, which was sunny and lovely and included deliciously-runny poached eggs ... But, I have to say, it completely messed up our eating schedules. Brunch at 11, lunch/dinner at 3 ... it left us hungry for something before bedtime.

Hungry for something to fill our bellies, but not too much. For something sleep-inducing; nourishing, but slightly-sweet; something that wouldn't involve too much effort, or time .. (because we were snuggled up on the couch reading stories, after all).

Something like porridge.

But not your run-of-the-mill breakfast porridge. Porridge with protein - in the form of nut butter and ground flax - to balance the grains. With antioxidant-rich raw cacao powder, and the subtle sweetness of pear juice. The taste of dessert one craves when it's dark and cold outside - without a single grain of processed sugar.

I dare Goldilocks to stop at just one bowl of this stuff ...

***********
Bedtime Porridge with Cocoa and Flax Meal
serves 2

The time
15 min

The ingredients
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup pear (or apple) juice
1/2 cup milk (use any non-dairy milk if you prefer)
1 Tbs macadamia paste (or your fave nut butter)
1 Tbs raw cacao powder
3 Tbs freshly-ground flax meal

*use organic ingredients when you can! And to get the most out of your flax, grind it fresh each time you use it and try not to heat it too much.

The process
1. Put everything but the flax into a saucepan and cook over medium heat (stirring pretty regularly) until the oats are cooked and it's the consistency you like.

2. Remove from heat and stir in the flax. Serve with extra milk, if you like.

3. Relax. Get sleepy. Snuggle.

The cost
Around about $1, if you do it organic. What a bear - gain. (ha ha)

And after our porridge? Little Bear went to bed without a single rumble in her tummy - and slept all. night. long. Coincidence? Probably. But I like to think this porridge has magic, sleep-inducing powers nonetheless.

Sleep well, and be happy,
Amanda xx

  1. Yes indeed, "lovely" is the perfect word.

Is macadamia paste something that's sold commercially in Oz? I love the idea of spooning it into grains and eating it for breakfast.

(Sorry, but I'm a breakfast, not nighttime, porridge girl.)

(Then again, when it's nighttime by you, it's breakfast time by me!)

  2. I agree, Sherilyn!

Cheryl, yes indeed, macadamia paste is available here pretty much anywhere. But then macadamias are native to Queensland ... (I'd always thought Hawaii!)

Tonight, in fact, I'm planning to use it in some ravioli... mmm...

  3. If Goldilocks did stop to eat this porridge, she'd not only be sitting on the chair and sleeping in the bed, she'd be moving into her own room at your place.
