Four Ways
We all make choices, every day of our lives. We choose coffee or no coffee; latte or cappuccino or unlimited house brew. Every time we check email at work, it's because we've chosen to. At lunch we choose ham on rye or avocado on sourdough or egg salad. After work, we choose a long commute or books with the kids or soaps on tv or a brisk 5km run. And yes, I said choose a long commute.
There are always options. Alternatives. Choices.
Ok. Here's what I think. I think that our lives - bodies - selves can be ANYTHING that we make of them, if we put our hearts into it. Each instant, we come to a four-way intersection that forces us to choose one direction or another.
What we have to learn is HOW TO MAKE THE CHOICE that takes us in the direction we want to go, and HOW NOT TO LOOK BACK.
Because guilt sucks. Regret sucks. Self-loathing sucks. There is absolutely no fun in eating a chocolate bar if you're just going to punish yourself for it later. (Trust me, I know from experience.)
Even better? MAKE THE CHOICE THAT MAKES YOU NOT LOOK BACK. Do you get what I mean? I mean that you have to think before you step out into that intersection ... have a look (however briefly) down each road ... think of CONSEQUENCES. It's tough at first, but let me tell you - it doesn't take long to get good at it.
And you know what happens? You stop punishing yourself so much. Your decisions become more fluid. And your life starts moving in the direction you want it to. Because YOU HAVE TAKEN CONTROL.
It's simple. Not easy - but simple. Choose to take control. Starting now.

ReplyDeleteLove this! Very well thought out! Enjoy life! =)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. This is the epitome of being true to yourself. And like all habits, it has to be learned. There is some dedication and committment required to make this type of behaviour automatic. But it can be done - and it is soooo worthwhile! We all need a reminder like this from time to time. Thankyou!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, thank you. Thanks for finding the words to encourage me for a change. This blog is truly an inspiration
